FDA: Only four health facilities are allowed to perform stem cells in the country

Food and Drug Administration (FDA) accredited only four health facilities to perform stem cell services in the country. 

Stem cell therapy- is a type of intervention strategy that introduces new stem cells into damaged tissue in order to treat disease or injury as well as for cosmetic purposes.

Atty. Nicolas B. Lutero III, Director IV of the DOH–Health Facilities and Services Regulatory Bureau (HFSRB), said that only the below-mentioned four health facilities have so far met the guidelines they have set in 2013 in providing stem cell treatments.
Here are the following:

Stem cell treatments that are currently allowed in the PHL are:

  • hematopoietic stem cell transplantation
  • corneal resurfacing with limbal stem cells
  • skin regeneration with epidermal stem cells.

Administrative Order No. 2013-0012

  • Laid out the rules and regulations governing the accreditation of health facilities engaging in human stem cell and cellular therapies in the country.
  • To ensure patients’ access to safe and quality health facilities engaging in human stem cell and cell-based therapies in the country.

Advisory: Please inform the DOH of any person/s or institution/s administering stem cells without accreditation or using stem cells for other indications not yet approved by the FDA.
