Barangay Tugaig- "Bad and a killer", "government enemies", this is what we think when we heard the word rebels. But this thought is not always right because we don't definitely know the insights of every rebel. It might be of personal reason, safety, power and money. But the one good thing is, they do not choose to remain. Many are still positive and looking forward to have a new life with a family that can sustain its need.

Know Khalil Nunting, an ex-MILF rebel. Nunting lived for almost 22 in years as a member of Moro Islamic Liberation Front or MILF. But now after living the life of a rebel, he is pursuing a fresh path in life - that is to earn an education for personal advancement and provide honest, hard-earned income for his family of five. Nunting is now 44 years old and one of 70 graduate–members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) from the Alternative Learning System of the government extended to former rebels. He finished the ALS Basic Education Training Module, said he wants to pursue higher degree of education for his family.

He also said, “I would like to become a mobile phone repairman to earn an income for my wife, three daughters and one boy,”

Another graduate, Ramla Macao, 52, wife of a former MILF rebel, said she feels proud of her accomplishment and also wants to pursue further studies. Macao also graduated from the ALS program Tuesday, 01-17-2017 together with her two daughters. “I am really very happy I have not tasted education in the past,” a teary-eyed Macao said.

What Is MTF?

MTF or Mindanao Trust Fund (MTF) was established in 2005 to consolidate international development assistance for the socio-economic recovery of conflict-affected communities in Mindanao. MTF is a multi-donor grant facility, financed the three-part program for the former rebels through a budget of PHP3.5 million. Matthew Stephens is MTF task team leader.

Government of the Philippines Peace Panel Chair for the Bangsamoro Irene Santiago, who was special guest in the activity here, had expressed confidence that the MTS-CSFI (Community and Family Services International) programs in the area would further produce positive response to the local communities.

“Do not lose hope because in hope we could attain peace,” she said.

Mohagher Iqbal, chair of the MILF peace implementing panel, joined Santiago in the activities here.

The six acknowledged MILF camps.

  1. Camp Abubakar as-Siddique in Maguindanao
  2. Camp Badre in Maguindanao
  3. Camp Omar ibn al-Khattab in Maguindanao
  4. Camp Rajamuda in North Cotabato
  5. Camp Bilal in Lanao del Norte
  6. Camp Busrah Somiorang in Lanao del Sur.
