On Sunday afternoon, August 8, 1897, the Prime Minister of
Spain, Señor Canovas del Castillo was shot and killed by Italian Anarchist
Michele Angine Golli at the baths of Santa Agueda. Golli watched the Spanish
statesman and fired only when he had no chance of missing. Golli confesed that
he killed Canovas to avenge the Barcelona Anarchists and Don Jose Rizal who was
executed in Manila over 7 months earlier, on December 30, 1896 as an instigator
of the Philippine rebellion which Dr Rizal denied.
On August 8, 1901, the Philippine Constabulary (PC) was
organized by Henry T. Allen as the local police force. Allen an American, was
later dubbed as the Father of the Philippine Constabulary. By authority of Act
No. 175 of the Philippine Commission, the PC was established to assist the
United States military in combating the remaining Filipino revolutionaries.
The PC was replaced in 1991 by the current Philippine
National Police.
On August 8, 1967, the Association of Southeast Asian
Nations or ASEAN was established in Bangkok, Thailand with the principal aim of
strengthening economic and cultural development and maintaining peace in the
region.
The original five members of the ASEAN were Indonesia,
Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Brunei Darussalam joined on
January 8, 1984; Vietnam on July 28, 1995; Lao PDR and Myanmar on July 23,
1997; and Cambodia on April 30, 1999, making up what is today the 10-member
ASEAN.
